These recent accomplishments illustrate how BETA is actively succeeding in achieving its mission and vision:
- Connectivity.fi.ncsu.edu/
The legislature provided 12 million dollars in recurring funds to begin implementation of the School Connectivity Initiative as recommended by BETA and the Joint Technology Commissions Report. The implementation is underway and you can track its progress at the project website.
- NCVPS the First State Virtual School
The legislature has provided funding in the FY 2007 budget to support the implementation of the NC Virtual Public Schools Initiative. This program was first suggested by BETA in our E-Learning, Phase I report issued in August 2005.
- Increasing School Connectivity
In that same budget, the NC General Assembly provided $6,000,000 to upgrade public school connectivity and part of efforts to establish a comprehensive NC Regional Education Network. This was first suggested in BETA's e-NC report issued in May 2005. These funds will be used to:
- Expand the number of public schools serving pre-kindergarten through grade 12 with broadband connectivity
- Provide "last mile" connectivity to public schools and enhance development of regional broadband efforts
- Maximize the use of e-Rate to revise School Technology Plans
- Establishing NC Virtual at the Education Cabinet
In the e-Learning Phase II report done in February of 2006, BETA NC called for raising the prominence of NC Virtual to the Education Cabinet level. This was completed, with funding, in the FY07 budget.
- Changing Definition of Infrastructure to Include Technology
Infrastructure has long been defined in NC as including the physical assets of a community, like water, sewer and roads. Thanks to the work of BETA NC, the Office of State Budget and Management now recommends that the definition shall include modern communication and technology systems.
